Connect Group
At Catch the Fire Mississauga, our heart is to journey alongside every believer as they become a wholehearted follower of Jesus. We don’t run a traditional “discipleship class”—we do life together, walking with people so they mature in their faith and grow ever closer to Jesus.
These Principles are drawn directly from the Apostle Paul’s charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:1-7 (NIV). We’ve unpacked this powerful passage into life-giving truths to help you watch, reflect and grow.
Overview from 2 Timothy 2:1-7
Relationship Model over Class Model
Responsibility of Spiritual Parent and Earthly Parent
Strength in the Lord as the Goal
- Discipleship emphasizes spiritual maturity, not merely participation or church
membership - Paul’s charge to Timothy to “be strong in the Lord” emphasizes the importance of
growth in faith, character, and resilience
Confidence Through Observation
- Effective mentorship requires careful observation and discernment.
- Paul’s trust in Timothy came from observing his attentiveness, responsiveness,
and faithfulness. Paul makes note of prophecies over Timothy (1 Timothy 1:18)
Discipleship as Preparedness for Spiritual Warfare
- Disciples are likened to soldiers: disciplined, focused, and ready for spiritual
challenges - Commitment and intentionality are required, not casual engagement
Discipleship as Mentorship and Hard Work
- Effective discipleship demands effort, patience, and sacrifice from the mentor
- Mentors often witness the first fruits of spiritual transformation as they invest in
others
Focus on Truth, Not Controversy
- Discipleship must prioritize teaching the Word over divisive debates or
distractions. Avoid the Doctrine of men and demons - Sound doctrine safeguards faith and promotes stability in believers
Multiplication of Faithful Leaders
- Discipleship aims to equip others who can, in turn, disciple
- The goal is reproducible spiritual leadership, where faithfulness and teachability
are passed on
Raising People of Purpose
- Discipleship equips men and women for purposeful ministry and mission in God’s kingdom.
- The process fosters readiness and intentionality in service to others
